November 23, 2007 Teaching others.......

We are so thrilled with all of the notes and words of support to our ladies. Thanks to everyone.

Above: the beginning of a handbag that will be felted and below: another one is done!

Above: our client who loves her new knitting skill is making a baby blanket, her design!
Below: she finished her poncho, her design!
Above: scarves and below Yvette (who works here) is stopping by our knitting group to see everything that everyone is working on and to try on mittens! Come join us and knit Yvette!

Below: more scarves.......

Below: Maryanne who is a sometimes volunteer came today. Yeaaaa! It is great to see you.

Lucia, our volunteer, is showing us a hoodie she made for her niece. Some of the clients asked her to teach them and so in two weeks Lucia will have a hoodie workshop for some of the ladies.

Above: two more to be felted handbags in progress.

Above: lots of scarves by different clients.
Zelphia is working on another intricate shawl design. Today she taught one of the newer clients a vine pattern. I will have it on next week's blog and it is so beautiful.
Above and below: this is the lady that never thought she would knit. Look at her go.

Above and below: this is Tiffani a new knitter (grey shirt)who works here. she is being taught how to cast on by a client and below she is showing everyone a scarf she finished for her nephew. Something I have noticed recently:Those that have been here longer and knitting longer are teaching newcomers. Sometimes when I come in and meet someone new, I am told "Oh, I already got her started!" It is great to have lots of knitting teachers!!!!

Look at this beautiful scarf. It is hard to tell but she did "condo knitting" - she used size 17 and size 11 needles and after casting on 9 did five rows with the large and 5 rows with the small for the whole scarf.

November 16, 2007 - Happy Thanksgiving

My first sweater! Not quite a person sweater but a good start. One of our clients wants to make a sweater for her daughter's favorite dog stuffed animal. Below she has a leash and collar she knitted.

Above is a shawl, she has only been here about two weeks. Below is a handbag soon to be ready for felting.

Look at the hat and scarf she designed. Below a shawl for a little toddler.

Megan who works here was proudly showing us her socks!
Leslie and Zelphia - two of our wonderful volunteers - are showing the ladies the einstein coats that they created (Leslie's is in progress), Zelphia's was done long ago. My photo doesn't quite get the detail of the coats correctly.
One of our clients is busy making christmas ornaments, little santa hats she is felting.
She was so very proud that she finally learned how to knit. She has been trying for a couple of weeks but got it today!
Above: Lucia finished her husband's birthday present. Below she is now working on a hoodie for her niece. And she made the grey sweater she is wearing.

This client is working on a stitch that makes a lacey look. she is casting on an odd number and then k1, yo,k2tog,yo, and so on.
Zelphia is teaching some of the clients how to make a shawl like the one she did above. Several of our clients were inspired and started one themselves.

Above: a scarf and below: look how long the newbie scarf is getting!

Here is Devon who came back to visit us. Devon used to work here and used to knit with us! It was great to have her stop by.
Below Terry, a therapist here, is working on her everything blanket. That is a blanket with each row a different yarn.

We received some cones of yarn and the ladies went to work during our knitting group putting it into balls! It was fun. They learned that if you turn too fast it pops off the top! They quickly got the hang of it and are starting some new exciting projects!
She is getting her hat done!
and more scarves in progress.
Below: the beginning of a handbag.

Thank you to everyone! I pass on all of the good wishes and words of wisdom during our knitting group. I want to write more and will but the weeks go by so fast. I always want to get the photos posted quickly and rather than delay them here they are. It is wonderful to watch all of the new knitters have so much fun with their new found skill!

November 9, 2007

Yvette who works here had us all laughing as she had fun coming in and thanking everyone for their beautiful knitted creations and pretending to leave with them. It didn't work but nice try!

This is the prayer shawl we all finished for a client's mother who is very ill. We all shared adding the fringe with Zelphia (our volunteer) overseeing the project.
It is felted!
This grey boucle yarn knitted beautifully!

Look at her! There is no stopping her now!

Above: she finished the mittens. Below: she finished the sweater. It came to us in pieces and she figured out how to finish it off. It is so warm and will be great for the cold weather here in Philadelphia.

This was the biggest skein of yarn we have ever seen. Our client is going to show us what it looks like when she unwinds it! Below: She is making a scarf that she called a pidge(?). I think I have it right but I will photo it when done.

This is Marcella, our school librarian volunteer who comes when her school is off. She is an inspiration with the knitted things she shows us.

Below: she finished her hat. the matching scarf is a few photos below.
